BAKABERG works to dismantle the stigma around seeking mental health and normalize all aspects of self-care including mental health.

Mental health conditions do not discriminate based on race, colour, gender or identity. Anyone can develop a mental health problem, however, African Americans sometimes experience more severe forms of mental health conditions due to unmet needs, racism, state sanctioned violence, stigma and other barriers. As a result, African Americans are 10% more likely to experience serious psychological distress, according to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health. (NAMI) African Americans, like many minority communities, are also more likely to experience socioeconomic disparities such as exclusion from health, educational, social and economic resources. These disparities may contribute to worse mental health outcomes. According to Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, “so often the stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevent Black [people] from taking the step of seeing a therapist.

Dismantle the stigma and take the next steps in managing your mental health today.
